Patina is the coloured oxide layer formed on the bronze after the product is finished. This colour is applied manually and can have many variations in colour. The colours green and brown are available from us. When bronze is not treated, the colour changes to green over the years. The process of applying this layer is difficult to control, which results in each object being unique.
MAINTENANCE
The base material bronze does not decay and therefore requires no maintenance. The coloured patina, however, does. When a green patina has been applied, only removing dirt with a soft cloth, water and soapy water is sufficient. Do not scrub hard because the layer is fragile. Over the years, the green layer will change and become more even. A slightly shiny wax layer is applied over the brown patina. This wax layer stops the oxidation process and prevents the bronze from oxidising further and eventually turning green. If the object is placed indoors, keeping it dust-free is sufficient. Outdoors, the brown patina requires more maintenance. Depending on the location and weather conditions, the wax layer should be touched up at least once every two years. This is done by smearing it with beeswax. Apply beeswax with a cloth, let it soak in and then polish it out.
